Martha Graham

Born 11th May 1894 and died 1st April 1991.

Danced and taught for over 70 years.

Creator of contemporary dance.

Created 181 ballets.

Dancer, teacher, and choreographer.

 

Her professional career began in 1916 at Denishawn school and dance company founded in Los angles by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn.

Martha explored different world dances and folk dances.

She went to Eastman school of music in 1924 in Rochester to teach and experiment even more.

Martha made her first debut as an independent artist in 1926.

Physical skills 

Co-ordination- moving multiple parts of the body simultaneously.

Strength- to be able to engage a muscle for a long period of time 

Flexibility- range of movement at a joint 

Balance- to be a be able to hold positions with minimal support 

Posture and alignment- the way your body is positioned 

Stamina- to be able to do movement for a long period of time without stopping
